New product catalogue at CERATIZIT: CombiEdge
Three applications possible with one insert

In the focussed segment mechanical engineering CERATIZIT has a new solution for the production of bearing rings. From now on three machining operations are possible with only one tool: the new CombiEdge system. It is suitable for longitudinal and face turning as well as for grooving radii.

“CombiEdge will be integrated into the standard turning programme and is now available in two assembly sizes,” says Harald Schulte, segment manager for mechanical engineering/cutting tools. “In addition we are able to manufacture tailored extensions for our customers. If a customer needs other radii, for example, we can produce them tailored to his needs”, states Schulte.

Since June 2006 the solution with the SNMG120412 insert has been available in the market (radii ranging from 0.4 to 3 mm). The new programme with the SNMG150612 insert makes radii from 3 to 6 mm possible. All CombiEdge inserts are available in the HyperCoat grade CTC1130. For the new range CERATIZIT has also published a catalogue which can be downloaded at http://www.ceratizit.com/.

The forerunner: the Maltese insert
Every tooling expert knows the Maltese cutting inserts, named after their shape that resembles a Maltese cross. In order to be able to grind them without problems, most of these inserts do not have a chip groove. This however deteriorates chip evacuation and causes high cutting forces. And unfortunately that is not the only disadvantage of the product. The contact face is short, which reduces stability, and the fact that standardisation is still missing today for these inserts and tools is another issue. This means low flexibility.

This is how CombiEdge works
With a pressed chip geometry and utilising a three-point-location seating configuration it is possible with CombiEdge to find solutions for the applications which have not been covered so far. Furthermore CombiEdge forms the chips in a way so the machining process is not disturbed. “In this manner we fulfil a request often expressed by our customers and provide maximum production security,” explains Schulte. The highlight of the new cutting solution from CERATIZIT however is the triple application of CombiEdge. “Eight cutting edges are available to groove radii, the other eight edges work as normal inserts for longitudinal and face turning. Compared to the Maltese insert the CERATIZIT customer benefits from a cost saving of around 50% when applying CombiEdge.
