The triple solution: CombiEdge
offers three applications with one insert

In the focus segment mechanical engineering CERATIZIT has a new solution for the production of bearing rings. From now on three machining operations are possible with only one tool: the new CombiEdge insert. It is suitable for longitudinal and face turning as well as for grooving radii.

Every tooling expert knows the Maltese cutting inserts, named after their shape that resembles a Maltese cross. In order to be able to grind them without problems, most of these inserts do not have a chip groove. This however deteriorates chip evacuation and causes high cutting forces. And unfortunately that is not the only disadvantage of the product. The contact face is short, which reduces stability, and the fact that standardisation is still missing today for these inserts and tools is another issue. This means low flexibility.

A tried and tested principle provides reliable insert clamping
CombiEdge is the remedy for such problems – with a pressed chip groove and a reliable insert clamping guaranteed by a three-point contact. This system has already revealed to be well-suited for CERATIZIT’s MaxiLock D clamping system. Furthermore CombiEdge forms the chips in a way so the machining process is not disturbed. CERATIZIT has satisfied a frequent request of the operators and provides maximum machining security. “The highlight of this new machining solution however is the triple application of CombiEdge”, says Hans Maier, project leader in the development department. “Eight cutting edges are available to groove radii, the other eight edges work as normal inserts for longitudinal and face turning.”

An intelligent alternative to the Maltese insert
CombiEdge will be offered as a standard programme and is available in two assembly sizes. The new solution with the SNMG12014 insert will already be available for the METAV Nord. The complete programme including SNMG 150612, with radii ranging from 0.4 to 6 mm, will be available in the market on October 1st. The inserts are provided with a coating grade HyperCoat CTC1130 as a standard. For the production of bearing rings this intelligent alternative to the Maltese insert will represent a benchmark in the sector.
