CERATIZIT receives ’Austrian Nano Award’ for coating
Second award within only a few months |

The winners of the first ‘Austrian Nano Award’ have been determined. At the end of November, Secretary of State, Christa Kranzl, from the Federal Ministry for traffic, innovation and technology (BMVIT) awarded seven researchers a prize for their excellent success in research and achievements in the field of nanosciences. 200 (by invitation only) guests from the sectors of research, politics and economy acclaimed the award winners in Vienna. The international jury also honoured Dr. Martin Kathrein from the carbide specialist company CERATIZIT (research and development, cutting tool division). For his application-orientated research in the category ‘nanoBUSINESS’ he received one of the awards to the value of 20,000 euros and an Award Trophy, namely a nanocoated work of art.
Together with his team at CERATIZIT, material scientist Kathrein developed extremely wear resistant nanocoatings for tools which are able to adapt to the various cutting conditions. The submitted work was entitled ‘Nanostructured Multifunctional Hard Coating HyperCoat-P’ and concentrates on nanostructured coatings.
Dr. Kathrein developed innovative multifunctional nanostructured coatings which are based on nitrides with multiple alloys and show optimal properties even when subject to high stress. The innovative coatings are produced through a physical deposition procedure from the gas phase (PVD). At CERATIZIT they are listed under the trade name HyperCoat-P. Thanks to their excellent properties and maximum performance capacity, such coatings enable tailored solutions in particular for difficult cutting operations.
MaxiMill 211, the recently presented CERATIZIT product of the year 2008, is of course provided with the innovative HyperCoat-P coating. By the way, the predominant part of the CERATIZIT cutting tools is characterized by a protective wear resistant coating.
Second award within a short period of time: CERATIZIT received the MM Award 2008 at AMB The Nano Award is already the second Award that CERATIZIT has received within a short period of time. At AMB in Stuttgart the carbide specialist won the MM Award for the MAC coolant set which offers a new method of direct air cooling from the inside of the tool. It makes complete dry machining of aluminium wheels possible without refitting the machines.
Research prize for nanosciences and nanotechnologies Nanotechnology is considered the key technology of the 21st century. Nanotechnology also plays an ever more important role in the economy. Currently around 300 nano-products can be found in the Austrian market. The Austrian Nano Award is an initiative of the Federal Ministry for traffic, innovation and technology. The price will be awarded every two years in the future.
