CERATIZIT: Certified Greenhouse Gas Compensation Since March 2025

CERATIZIT: Certified Greenhouse Gas Compensation Since March 2025

The Plansee Group, and with it CERATIZIT, decided to implement beyond value chain mitigation measures, by compensating its Scope 1&2 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions with certified projects in the US and India. To neutralize unabated emissions, CERATIZIT follows a comprehensive strategy that includes reducing emissions and compensating for any remaining emissions.

Over the past three years, CERATIZIT has already taken decisive steps toward reducing its GHG emissions by implementing effective measures. "Overall, these measures have allowed us to significantly reduce our GHG emissions by more than 20 percent* based on our own efforts," says Executive Board Spokesman Dr. Andreas Lackner.

As of the beginning of the 2025/26 fiscal year, the Plansee Group’s unavoidable GHG emissions in Scope 1&2, which are forecasted around 78 kilotons of CO2e, are being compensated through projects adhering to the highest requirements.

"We want to lead the way in our sectors and mitigate climate change beyond our value chain," Lackner says.

Own efforts lead to reduced carbon emissions

This reduction efforts include procuring electricity from renewable sources at all the CERATIZIT production sites worldwide, as well as pushing efforts to recycle the materials it uses – in the case of tungsten, the recycling rate was 95 percent in the fiscal year 2023/24. Further initiatives are aimed at reducing energy use, installing electrolyzers for hydrogen production, upping the use of process heat, and recycling hydrogen.

"We also have ambitious plans for the coming years. We want to continue decarbonization through our own initiatives so we can reduce the impact our production has on the environment step by step," Lackner says. CERATIZIT will also be placing greater responsibility on their suppliers. "Around 2/3 of our GHG emissions are linked to purchased products and services – so we'll be working hard with our suppliers to identify solutions for avoiding and reducing these emissions."

High requirements for compensation certificates

CERATIZIT places high requirements on the quality of the certificates it uses to compensate for the share of Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions that have been unavoidable so far. As a global manufacturing company, CERATIZIT is working to carry out compensation projects close to its larger project sites. These include a forest conservation project in Pennsylvania in the US, situated in proximity to the largest US production site in Towanda. The second project is near the Mysore and Bangalore production sites in India, where the production of solar power is being financed. Both projects are planned for the long-term and are being monitored by internationally recognized certification bodies (American Carbon Registry, short ACR and Verified Carbon Standard, VCS by Verra) based on the highest standards available at present (Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market, ICVCM), in addition to conducting internal audits. In Europe, the process to select a suitable project is still ongoing.

Long-term plan to reduce GHG emissions

In the long run, CERATIZIT commits to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by FY2040. This means reaching the long-term target to reduce absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions by 90% by FY2040 from a FY2020 base year.
